Blood Diamond

I’ve seen Blood Diamond a number of times now. And each time I see the film, I’m filled with the need to do something about poverty and destruction that is reported in media worldwide everyday. Still, nothing changes or perhaps the changes are not reported. It made me think that we are a society that loves stories of death and destruction. When a big tragedy occurs, newspapers and TV channels are filled with tales of gore and violence. There’ll be tons of stories about victims dying, sad stories about families torn apart or how ineffective governments should be held responsible. While I can appreciate the need to tell these real stories, I often find that positive stories of rehabilitation and reconstruction are few and far between. Once the tragedy has occured and the next one comes along, everyone seems to forget the issue at hand and moves on. There are few instances of a follow-up on what’s happened since. And there are times that even the follow-ups focus on the negativity and ignore the positives in the larger picture. I wish there were more stories being told about good deeds in the world today…
